SPOP Article and Photo Gallery!

“SPOP is the best way to help new students, and their parents, transition into the UCI family,” says Jill Halvaks, director of new student programs. “You get academic advising, you enroll in classes, you find out about resources, you meet other freshmen, and you get to meet successful current students.”

Our Return Home to the UCI Student Center

Commentary by S. Tajiri, 1/7/2008

It has been about 6 months since the Office of the Dean of Students moved from its temporary accomodations in the Humanties Trailer Complex into our new facilities in the UCI Student Center, and it's nice to be home. The trailers were nice enough in the interior, but things just were not the same.

With our return to the UCI Student Center, students have easier access to our office and traffic and utilization of our services has gone back up, probably due to our proximity to the food courts, Bookstore, ATMs and banking services, student government, and our departmental partners and neighbors, Scheduling & Conference Services, and Health Education.

Also joining us on the 3rd floor are two of our Dean of Students daughter offices, the Center for Service in Action and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center. Having these centers so close by has been a boon to both offices. We have been able to share resources and consult with each other on a daily basis such that at times we feel like a single unit instead of 3 departments.

The early weeks in the facility had been a little rough, with no air conditioning, no signage, an elevator that kept breaking down, and nearly continuous fire alarms, but the UCI Student Center staff were very helpful in alleviating as many issues as possible and over the course of these past 6 months has been steadily addressiing all of these issues such that we are nearly settled in at last.

What remains to be done? Well, we are still wrestling with our decor, furniture and accessories, hours of operation, air conditioning and ventilation, and fire safety checks for things like display cases and magnetically held doors. We may have some minor interior construction done and we will probaby not feel completely settled in and fully functional until next fall, but we are happy to be here and excited about our future in this new and impressive facility.

Perhaps one day we'll have a virtual tour you take online, but in the mean time, come visit us on the 3rd floor (south wing) in person and experience our office live!
